Obituary for Norman L. Steiner Sr.

Print
Norman L. Steiner passed away Saturday, June 2, 2018 at Green Knoll Center in Bridgewater, NJ, due to complications from multiple sclerosis. He was born April 22, 1940, in Elizabeth, NJ, son of the late Mary and Peter Steiner, Sr.

After graduation from Cranford High School, Norman attended Union County College in Cranford, NJ, where he earned an Associates Degree in Business Administration and Management. He then transferred to Rutgers University, New Brunswick. He worked daytimes in the family painting business, supporting his young family and finishing his degree at night. Norman was awarded a Bachelors of Science Degree from Rutgers University, New Brunswick, in 1965.

Norman worked twenty years for Honeywell as an HVAC Engineer. He then briefly worked in a managerial position at AT&T before being hired in the same capacity at Exxon Corp. He resided with his family in Piscataway before moving to a new home in Hillsborough, NJ, in 1973. Above all things, Norm had an unwavering love and devotion for all of his family.

Norm showed an early interest in amateur radio. He built his first crystal radio during his early school years. This interest became a lifetime pursuit and source of happiness. As an adult, he petitioned his town to allow installation of a ninety foot radio tower, which he had constructed, to be placed on his property in Hillsborough. This was the maximum allowable height for the area.

During these years, Norm voluntarily and routinely patched phone calls between United States Navy servicemen at a base in Antarctica and their family members back in the US. He was awarded many certificates for this service, and in 1971 was given a gift with a letter of appreciation from the US Navy. His ham radio moniker, K2IAB, will live in infamy.

Norman was an astronomy enthusiast. He subscribed to an astronomy periodical and could discuss the topic for hours. He also enjoyed history and debating many of its finer points.

In his later years, he enjoyed rooting for his favorite sport teams, the Yankees and the Giants.

Norman is survived by his children, Allison Costa of Waterville, VT, and Norm Steiner of Boonton Twp, NJ; mother of his children, Linda Steiner of Cairo, NY; a brother Victor Steiner and wife Diana of Port St. Lucie, FL; a sister-in-law, Terry Steiner of Piscataway, NJ; and a daughter-in-law, Laura Steiner of Boonton Twp, NJ; eleven grandchildren: Diana, Lisa, Sandy, and Daniel Jr., Katzman; Saul, Caleb, Levi, Seth, Noah, and Aislinn Costa; and Robert Steiner; four great-grandchildren: Kayley and Elizabeth Kubilus; Jonathan Gilkeson; and Alexis Badore; two nieces, three nephews; and many cousins.

He is predeceased by a daughter, Dawn Katzman; a brother, Peter Steiner, Jr.; and a son-in-law, Scott Costa.

The family wishes to thank James and the entire staff at Green Knoll Center for the many years of dedicated care and service toward Norman in the final years of his life.
