Dorothea (Dot) Cooney, 93, passed away on Saturday, February 4, 2017 at The Chelsea at Bridgewater.
Born in Philadelphia, PA., Mrs. Cooney was raised in Elizabeth prior to settling in Plainfield in 1952, and South Plainfield in 1967.
Dot was a longtime communicant of Sacred Heart RC Church in South Plainfield. She was a member of the Altar Rosary Society and taught CCD at the former Sacred Heart School for 20 years. She was also a longtime substitute aide at Kennedy School.
Mrs. Cooney who never drove was well known throughout the borough of South Plainfield for her walking.
She enjoyed traveling, movies, and listening to Frank Sinatra but her family was what she held most true to her heart.
Predeceased by her husband Thomas, surviving are Dot’s daughters, Barbara McNulty (Robert) of Bridgewater and Beverly Bodenlos (John) of Delaware; son, William “Bill” Cooney (Tracey) of Las Vegas; nine grandchildren, Meghan McNulty (Evan Gropper), Katie, John, and Joe Bodenlos and Evan, Juliana, Kaylee, Rachel and Sam Cooney; and cherished great grandson, Bennett Gropper. Also surviving are cousins, Al Shilling and Joe Gall (Patricia); niece, Cathy Lucyk (Jim); nephew, Bob Brown (Harriet), and many loving close friends and extended relatives.
Funeral Services will be held on Wednesday, February 8, at 10:45AM in the McCriskin – Gustafson Home for Funerals, 2425 Plainfield Ave., South Plainfield, NJ 07080 followed by an 11:30AM funeral mass at Sacred Heart RC Church, South Plainfield.
Interment will follow at St. Gertrude’s Cemetery, Colonia.
Visitation will be held on Tuesday, February 7, 2017 from 2-4 & 6-8pm in the funeral home.
